About Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach…the earliest known history of the area now known as Surfside Beach was of a landowner named Tillman who build a plantation called “The Ark Plantation”. This was about 3,200 acres of land in which the main crops were sweet potatoes and rice. Tillman was said to have up to 60 slaves working the farm.

After Tillman’s death 1865, his plantation was broken up into smaller pieces. One part called “Roaches Beach” had several cottages built on it. The other parts were used in the lumber business. Roaches Beach was sold and renamed Floral Beach and then sold again in 1952. It was at this time that it was renamed Surfside Beach.

Growth of Surfside Beach really began when the Air Force Base was brought back to life in 1956. From that time to the present Surfside Beach has been steadily growing as the “family Beach”. The current population is almost 4,500 and is still growing.
