Myrtle Beach…Originally called “New Town”, Myrtle Beach was nothing more than something that was considered as worthless land. After Burroughs and Collins bought the land in 1900, the development began. First, Burroughs and Collins built a railroad from Conway to Myrtle Beach. This railroad is still seen running on the north side of Highway 501 and terminates at the old train depot in downtown Myrtle Beach.
Soon after the railroad was completed, the resorts were being built for all the beach goers. When Mrs. Burroughs, of Burroughs and Collins fame, won the name the city contest, New Town was renamed Myrtle Beach.
1954 brought Hurricane Hazel to our shores which nearly destroyed the entire beach. But Myrtle Beach was too strong for any hurricane and was soon rebuilt to better than new condition. New resorts, many golf courses, restaurants, shops were all on the rise. One reason for Myrtle Beach’s growth was the addition of the Myrtle Beach Air Force base that was built in the 1940′s for the protection of our coastal waters against German U-Boats. Although the base was closed in the 1990′s, the area has been transformed into a beautiful community.
Incorporated in 1938 and registered as a city 1957, Myrtle Beach has continued to grow and expand. Activities have been added for not only the summer vacationers but also the winter snowbirds. Come check us out for yourself.
