Murrells Inlet, SC

The fishing village of Murrells Inlet [see map] (pop. 5,519), billed as the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina,” prides itself on the natural beauty of the marshes that surround it and works hard to preserve that beauty. A Marshwalk and creekside park encourage residents and visitors to stop and enjoy the view. Residents are older-median age is 47-and only 17.6% of the households have children 18 or younger. Median family income is $47,194.

Murrells Inlet grew from the creation of the large rice plantations of the 1700 and 1800′s. These plantations produced rich and powerful people who developed the beach areas as their summer playgrounds.

The inlet over the years saw many uses which include everything from pirates to blockade runners of the Civil War to the present day fishing industry. Pirates would use the creeks as safety to hide from anyone who came looking. The blockade runners would wait until an opening occured between the Union Warships to get their supply of cotton and other goods to England for exchange for war materials.

By the end of the Civil War, the rice business was nearly all destroyed. The last plantation surviving only into the early 1900′s. Fortunatly, the fishing business was thriving and kept everyone employed.

Over this whole time, the beach was being built up into the town that we have today. Even with the odd hurricane venturing into the area, Murrells Inlet has continued to grow. Today the town has some of the best seafood around. Check it out.
