About Little River

Little River…started out as a small fishing village on the edges of what the indians called “Mineola” or “Little River”. Throughout these earlier times, Little River was used by pirates, smugglers and gun runners during the Civil War. Captain Kidd and Blackbeard were just a few of the pirates to have visited Little River.

George Washington himself was known to stop in Little River for a bite to eat in 1791 while he was on a tour of the south.

By the 1850′s, Little River had turned into quite the fine port. But the Civil War put that on hold. The port was blockaded by the north during the Civil War. In 1863 Fort Randall (at the mouth of the Little River) was captured by a Union Naval party. After a Confederate counterattack, the Yankees were driven back to their ships.

As roads were built, the importance of the port became less and less. Today, Little River returned to its former status of being a fishing village. The Little River was made part of the Intracoastal Waterway in 1936 so don’t try to go find it.
